During November and December 2020, the Scottish Tourism Emergency Response Group (STERG) conducted a business survey to look back on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tourism businesses with a focus on financial support and changes to their operations.
This STERG research provides vital insights into the challenges facing Scottish tourism and will inform the development of a comprehensive five-year plan for the industry, as recommended by the Scottish Tourism Recovery Taskforce.
After a full analysis of the survey results, Progressive Partnership, the independent research company that administered the research on STERG’s behalf, will deliver a detailed presentation of the research findings. This will provide both an overall Scotland perspective as well as sectoral and regional differences where applicable.
There's no doubt that we have seen businesses adapt and change during the pandemic and, according to the survey, around a third of businesses have changed their operating model with another 17% planning changes.
Of those, some 60% are targeting new markets and 67% are looking at new ways to market and sell their products. Whether it’s encouraging takeaway sales or targeting domestic or ultra-local markets, these businesses have put innovation at the heart of their survival.
